Wi-Max Services

Reliance Communications is currently in the test mode for their newest offering on Internet Services; WiMAX. Being offered as part of a pilot project, we were amongst the first few to opt for this technology. The service is being offered through several Direct Sales Associates (DSAs). One of the major among them is Maa Communications. in Hyderabad, India, which performs the entire range of services including installation and customer support, through whom we got our connection.

Though currently the WiMAX service commands a premium, we thought keeping up with the latest in technology definitely was worth the price. Priced at roughly the same as most other broadband services in India, Reliance Communications' WiMAX service not being 'wire-line', offers a certain amount of peace of mind. This WiMAX service is soon to be launched as a full Internet Service offering across several major Indian cities.

Implemented using Subscriber Stations (SS) and Base Stations (BS towers) from Telsima, this technology has far reaching consequences for the Internet Infrastructure in India. Though a lot more expensive to implement than traditional wire-line solutions, the reach of WiMAX is bound to be greater. Also, the rate of implementation (provided the demand is fulfilled) has the potential of being a high multiple of that of traditional broadband.

Currently the service seems quite good, considering it is still in the pilot project phase, and we estimate that no more than 400 WiMAX connections have been installed in Hyderabad city till date. The actual download / upload speeds are quite near the theoretical maximum permissible at the specific bit-rate.
